Ten standalones (well, twenty by the end of this two-part series) that wrapped up their plots just fine, but left me sitting there thinking “wait, I need more time in this world.” Not because anything was unresolved. Karen Dukess captures all the charm of a cozy without the corpse: a fake murder week backdrop that’s absurd and gently chaotic, wrapped around a genuinely aching story about grief, belonging, and a lifetime of emotional abandonment. The found-family thread with Wyatt and Amity felt instinctive from the very first pages, exactly the kind of bond that could anchor a whole series of return visits to this village. Add in a slow-burn romance with Dev Sharma that’s about choosing to stay rather than just falling for someone, and you’ve got a cast begging for a sequel. Carlotta Brentan’s narration threads the heartbreak and hilarity together perfectly. Read this if you want a mystery-shaped hug, and stay for the world you’ll want to visit again.

That’s exactly what makes it series-starter material: the market itself is the kind of setting built to be revisited, with more stalls and stranger magic waiting to be discovered. Rosa Escoda’s narration gives Serin a quiet, aching hopefulness that carries the whole thing, and her Issha is pure charm. It’s a comfort read with just enough melancholy to stay grounded. Read this if you love whimsical premises and stories that ask what you’d change about your life, then start dreaming up excuses to go back to the market.

The four of them (Alice, Samantha VanDyne, Joey O’Day, Bruce Phillip Kershaw) are so sharply drawn, and so differently broken by what they went through, that watching them circle back into each other’s orbit is riveting on its own. Which is exactly what makes this feel like just the first case, not the only one. The pacing never sags, the reveal keeps you second-guessing right to the end, and there’s clearly unfinished business left simmering under the surface once the mystery wraps. Read this if you love psychological aftermath dressed up as a mystery, and if you’re already hoping this crew gets pulled back together for one more case.

Read this if you want a thriller with real atmosphere and dread. Good thing it’s already confirmed as book one.
