It’s been a while since I’ve written book reviews, but I never stopped reading — always voraciously and always with heart. Now, I’m stepping back into the reviewing space, hoping to give back to the literary community that has embraced me so kindly and given me a place to belong. And what better way to return than by celebrating a novel rooted in that very same idea of belonging: a cozy paranormal story wrapped in the warmth of a found family.

I’m currently about 40% into The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna — and I’m completely enchanted. It’s a cozy, witchy novel filled with warmth, magic, and a strong “found family” vibe that’s resonating deeply with me.
This isn’t my usual genre (I tend to gravitate toward stories involving dead bodies!), but I picked it up as part of the Goodreads Reading Challenge to step outside my comfort zone, and I’m so glad I did. This gentle, whimsical fantasy-romantic-comedy is exactly the kind of comfort read I didn’t know I needed.
What’s striking me the most is Mika’s emotional journey, particularly how she navigates the experience of being treated like she belongs. As someone who has often felt like an outsider in most social settings, I relate so strongly to her hesitation, her quiet hope, and that surprise when people actually say out loud that she’s part of something. Her growing place within the quirky household at Nowhere House feels tender and real. I love the way Sangu writes. It is so easy to follow with a very realistic approach to a paranormal storyline, which feels contradictory, but is absolutely endearing.
I’m listening to the audiobook version, narrated by Samara MacLaren, and it’s a beautiful experience in itself. Her voice has this soothing, engaging quality which is gentle enough to keep the cozy atmosphere intact, but with enough strength and emotion to pull me right into the story alongside Mika. It feels like she’s telling me the story in real-time.
I can’t wait to see how the rest of the book unfolds, but I already know this is a story that will stay with me.
