Book two in the Queens of Crime series ditches the cozy veneer entirely for a darker, grittier wartime thriller, and it’s a huge upgrade. DCI Lilian Wyles gets a phenomenal arc navigating institutional sexism in the 1941 Metropolitan Police, while the four real-life crime writers weave into the investigation with more restraint and payoff than Book One. Didn’t expect to like the sequel more than the original, but I did. Read Book One first, then clear an afternoon for this one.

I requested this one purely for the meta brilliance. Niamh (whose name I adored, you rarely see Irish names done justice in fiction) untangles the mystery alongside her famous mother Annie and Annie’s fictional protagonist Leah, who becomes startlingly real as things unfold. Sarah Lotz crafted something genuinely fresh here. The premise isn’t just a gimmick. It’s woven in so deep in the novel, you’re not quite sure what you are reading until the end. Cozy mystery meets literary mind-bender, and the uniqueness of the concept alone makes it one to watch.

The Novel Detectives series finally clicked, after two books that only half-hooked me, this one finally puts real meat on the bones. Annie and Fletcher investigate a reclusive heiress’s disappearance from her family estate, and the whodunit is genuinely well-built: family secrets, rival heirs, a house full of people hiding something. Brought back all the charm from The Secret Bookcase Mysteries, plus a teaser near the end that’s already got me building theories. Went from lukewarm on this series to actively counting down for the next one.

Book two of the Marigold Cottages Murder Collective, and Nichols delivers again. This time Mrs. B practically rolls out the welcome mat for murder instead of it landing uninvited, and the found-family ensemble is even warmer now that we’re settled in with them. The multi-POV structure adds layers (still curious why we’re denied Mrs. B’s own perspective), and the mystery keeps the pages turning while the community anchors it all. Comfortable without being complacent, charming without losing stakes. If you loved the first, this one’s an automatic pre-order.
