May 2026 is absolutely stacked, and I don’t say that lightly. I’ve already read all of the books below (yes, every single one), and I am buzzing with excitement for you to get your hands on them. From chaotic food truck sleuthing to emotionally layered mysteries and magical kittens I would personally commit crimes for, this month is delivering across the board.
Here are my most anticipated (and already adored) May 2026 releases, in order of publication date:
Out Law (The Dresden Files #18.75) by Jim Butcher
🏷️ Publisher: Podium Publishing
📅 Release Date: May 5, 2026
🎁 ARC provided by: NetGalley
📖 Genre: Urban Fantasy

Harry Dresden is back! He’s older, wearier, but still armed with sarcasm and questionable life choices.
This novella delivers everything that makes Dresden Files addictive. The sharp wit, breathless action, and watching Harry grow into a mentor role hit different. At 208 pages, there’s zero fat on this story. Marcone life debts, demons with grudges, the IRS (somehow scarier than actual demons), and Bob the Skull being Bob.
Nineteen books in and Butcher still makes me grin and get a little misty. If you love urban fantasy with heart and snark, this is your next read.

A Zoom with a View by Jess Cannon
🏷️ Publisher: Dutton
📅 Release Date: May 5, 2026
🎁 ARC provided by: Edelweiss and NetGalley
📖 Genre: Cozy Mystery
A small-town bully turned influencer gets murdered, real estate drama ensues, and found family rallies to protect one of their own.
Once the mystery kicked in, I FLEW through this book. Cannon’s voice sparkles. Her humor, pacing, and small-town details are chef’s kiss. For a debut, this one is full of surprises.
The humor lands, the town feels vivid, Plus, I need to know what happens next, so I’m absolutely keeping an eye on what Cannon writes next.

Moonlight Murder (Detective Aunty #2) by Uzma Jalaluddin
🏷️ Publisher: Harper Perennial
📅 Release Date: May 5, 2026
🎁 ARC provided by: Edelweiss
📖 Genre: Mystery

Kausar Aunty is back, and she’s sharper, nosier, and more emotionally grounded than ever.
This installment digs deeper, tying a present-day case to a decades-old grief that hasn’t healed. Kausar’s “nosy aunty” persona is her superpower: people underestimate her, so they talk. As a Toronto girl, I loved recognizing the bones of real neighbourhoods under Golden Crescent’s fictionalized setting. The parallel investigations add serious emotional heft, and the resolution is less about “gotcha” and more about who gets to heal. By the end, it’s less about who did it and more about who gets closure, and that lands beautifully.
Plus that book three teaser? I’m already camping out in Golden Crescent’s imaginary Tim Hortons waiting for the next body to drop.

Hot Wings and Homicide (A Food Truck Mystery #2) by Carmela Dutra
🏷️ Publisher: Crooked Lane Books
📅 Release Date: May 12, 2026
🎁 ARC provided by: Signed physical copy from the author (who’s my author bestie too)
📖 Genre: Cozy Mystery
Okay, full disclosure: Carmela Dutra is my author bestie. But listen, this is not friendship bias talking. This series is legitimately addictive.
Seth, Beth, and Rylie (who can absolutely burn a grilled cheese) deliver chaotic, loyal, hilarious energy. The mystery hits closer to home with Beth’s ex as the victim, raising stakes while keeping the humor sizzling. This sequel ups the ante with sharper wit and tighter pacing.
I read this during a layover and genuinely wished my flight would be delayed just so I could keep reading. The banter is sharper, the pacing is tighter, and Detective Pretty Boy remains a national treasure. Come for the murder, stay for the sibling chaos and fried chicken cravings.

Voted Most Likely to Murder by Lacey Moone
🏷️ Publisher: Crooked Lane Books
📅 Release Date: May 12, 2026
🎁 ARC provided by: NetGalley
📖 Genre: Mystery

I refuse to believe this is a debut.
It doesn’t read like one. Lacey Moone writes like she’s been topping cozy mystery bestseller lists for years. Everything about this book feels seasoned: the pacing, the character work, the balance of humor and heart. Set around a high school reunion twenty years later, it taps perfectly into nostalgia, resentment, and long-buried secrets.
Belinda “Pretty” Bishop is messy, sarcastic, and incredibly easy to root for. The Nova Scotia setting is cozy, quirky, and unapologetically Canadian without leaning on clichés. This debut is so polished I kept checking the cover. Someone needs to investigate Lacey Moone’s resume because this is witchcraft.

The Black Cat Detectives by Kit Gray
🏷️ Publisher: Crooked Lane Books
📅 Release Date: May 26, 2026
🎁 ARC provided by: NetGalley and Edelweiss
📖 Genre: Cozy Mystery
There are paranormal cozies… and then there are PARANORMAL COZY MYSTERIES.
You think you’ve read cat cozies? You haven’t met Bippity, Boppity, and Boop. These three magical black kittens are THE kittens. The emotional grip these tiny magical detectives have on me? Unwell. Truly.
A huge portion is narrated from the kittens’ POV, and it’s not a gimmick. It’s a fully realized, emotionally rich storytelling choice that WORKS. Their love for Mila is fierce and pure. Every time Boop goes “Motherrrrrr” I ugly-cried with giggles.
The mystery is fast and keeps you guessing. By the end, I just wanted these tiny detectives safe and napping in a sunbeam. Cozy mystery readers, fantasy fans, cat lovers, this is your next comfort read.

The Diva Hosts a Murder by Krista Davis (Domestic Diva #19)
🏷️ Publisher: Kensington Cozies
📅 Release Date: May 26, 2026
🎁 ARC provided by: NetGalley
📖 Genre: Cozy Mystery

I came for the murder. I stayed for the “Dear Sophie” vs. “Dear Natasha” drama.
But here’s the twist: the murder is a total side quest, and I mean that as the highest compliment. What Krista Davis delivers is a full-blown celebration of found family and messy biological family colliding over a holiday weekend. Sophie somehow holding it all together while hosting what feels like the world’s most stressful gathering. Watching her remain gracious under pressure is goals.
Meeting all her relatives felt like crashing the best family reunion ever. This is a brilliant chocolate cake of a book.

Well, what are you waiting for?
Every single book on this list gave me something special, whether it was snort-laughing on planes, ugly-crying over kittens, or craving fried chicken. If May is any indication, 2026 is shaping up to be an incredible year for mystery lovers. Whether you’re here for magical kittens, messy reunions, food truck chaos, or emotionally rich investigations, there’s something on this list that’s going to hook you.
