Chapter 1

Four-year-old Aria’s giggles floated like bubbles in the warm evening air, mingling with the faint scent of cotton candy and roasted peanuts that clung to her pigtails.

“Papah, wasn’t that amazing?”, she chirped, skipping along the way home, her small hand snug in her father’s. “The fair was like a giant sparkle party! Can we go every single day?”

Her father, Oren, grinned, his eyes crinkling behind his perpetually crooked glasses. A born storyteller, especially after having Aria, he couldn’t resist a dramatic flourish.

“Oh, Ari, my little firecracker, I’d build you a fair in our backyard if I could! But alas, the Great Fair only graces us for three days a year, and today was its grand finale. We’ve conquered all three, haven’t we?”

Aria’s enthusiasm didn’t waver. “But Papah! There was so much more! The lights, the music, the man with the shiny hat!” She skipped around her dad, her sandals kicking up dust. “I had the best time.”

Oren adopted a mock-serious tone, fishing a slightly squished chocolate coin from his pocket. “Well, since you were a spectacularly well-behaved girl today, not a single tantrum in sight, this magical, slightly melty treasure is yours. Still enchanted, right?”

“Ooh, chocolate!” Aria snatched it, her eyes gleaming. “I was good because I was thinking so much, Papah. My head was all buzzy, couldn’t even be naughty.”

Oren raised an eyebrow, adjusting his glasses. “Is that so? And what grand mysteries had my clever Ari baby been pondering?”

“It’s a secret,” she teased, spinning around his legs, her dress flaring like a pinwheel. But her secret burst free in seconds. “Okay, okay, I’ll tell you! I was thinking of hypomosis.”

“Hypomosis?” Oren chuckled, catching her mispronunciation. “You mean hypnosis, don’t you? That magician in the shiny hat got you good, didn’t he?”

“Yes! He made the lady cluck like a chicken!” Aria’s hand flapped wildly. “I watched him super close, Papah. His sparkly wand, his secret spells. I think I can do hypomosis too. I want to make Mama laugh like that!”

Oren feigned a shiver, clutching his heart. “Oh no, my own daughter, a master hypnotist! What if you turn Mama and I into dancing monkeys? We’d never keep up with you!”

Aria hopped from stone to stone, swinging her father’s hand like a rope as their house came into view. Its porch light made the whole house look golden, like a treasure chest waiting for her. As they approached the house, Aria paused, still sticky-fingered from her chocolate coin, looking back at the last notes of carnival music floating after her.

Her mother, Mira, stood at the door, her hands dusted with soil from her beloved herb garden. Her messy hair told tales of a stubborn basil plant.

“Look at you two, all rosy from the sun!” Mira called, wiping her hands on her apron. “Did the fair survive you, Aria? And is there room for dinner? I made pizza, extra basil, fresh from the garden.”

“Pizza!” Aria squealed, kicking off her sandals and darting toward her mother. “Mama, mama, it was so fun! Papa tried to win you a teddy bear, but he was terrible at the ring toss. He missed every time!”

Oren groaned, trailing behind with her tiny backpack. “Go on, spill my secrets. But let’s not forget when you dropped your ice cream and swiped half of mine, you little bandit.”

Mira laughed, her eyes twinkling. “Honestly, Oren, between you and Aria, I’m not sure who’s the bigger kid.” She knelt to hug Aria, brushing a smudge of dirt from her cheek. “So, what’s this I hear about dancing monkeys?”

Aria beamed, bouncing on her toes. “I’m going to learn hypomosis, Mama! I’ll make you and Papah do silly dances, just like the magician!”

The family settled into the kitchen where the aroma of warm dough and basil filled the air. Aria twirled between the table and counter, a human carousel, as her parents exchanged a fond glance. As they sliced the pizza, Aria’s chatter slowed, her eyes narrowing in focus. She raised her tiny hands, mimicking the magician’s grand wave, and whispered. “You’re getting veeeeery sleepy…”

Oren froze mid-bite, his eyes wide in mock trance. Then, with a sudden cluck like a hen, he jolted. Shaking his head and winking at Mira, he whispered.

“Watch out, our little hypnotist is plotting something big.”

Mira smirked, playing along. “Oh, Ari. What have you started?”

Aria’s grin was pure mischief, her mind already spinning with plans to master her newfound magic.
