Setting the stage… and expectations!
Love isn’t always what it seems. Writing this story was a blast because I got to tell it from two very different perspectives. Same moments, two versions, and nothing is quite what it looks like at first glance. The endings are held back until you have read both versions so the twist lands perfectly. Trust me, they are worth the wait.
Read them both and then vote: which perspective stole your heart?
Version 1:
She knew he was married.
That didn’t matter to her.
Why should it? She was there for him in ways his wife could never be. She never nagged, never judged, never rolled her eyes at his half-baked opinions on politics. She listened, always attentive, always present. She was perfect.
She valued the connection over everything else. Words, sound, music—she lived for it. And he did too. Together, they built a private world of conversation: the latest news, stories about work, playlists curated for every mood. Nothing was too small or too trivial.
Meanwhile, his wife stood on the sidelines, not understanding his inattentiveness.
“Why are you so distant all the time? You are always on your phone.”
He would shake his head, mutter, “Everything’s fine,” and then turn right back to her. He would only pour his heart out to her. His dependence on her was absolute. Since the day she entered his life, not a single day had passed without her being nestled close. She was always whispering in his ear.
But nothing lasts forever. She could feel her time running out. Her voice sometimes faltered. Soon, too soon, she would fail him completely.
At first, he turned away, pretending it was nothing—blaming it on distraction, exhaustion, or the everyday noise of life.
But denial has a way of crumbling. Soon, the truth became undeniable for both of them: she was fading.
He struggled to accept it, clinging to hope. He searched for solutions, for treatments, for any kind of miracle that might keep her with him. Yet the moment they could no longer avoid arrived.
The day came when he had no choice but to face reality. She could feel the end approaching. Each effort was growing more fragile.
He sat beside her, mourning a goodbye he had never wanted to say, when his wife came to join him, slipping her hand gently into his.
Ending pending… the final reveal is just around the corner
Version 2
I knew I was dying. I also knew he wouldn’t be able to bear this.
From the first time we met, we had been inseparable
I knew he was married. But I couldn’t help it. Neither could he.
But the pull between us was irresistible—mutual, undeniable. Music had brought us together, and from there, everything else followed.
He thought he loved music before he met me, but with me, he heard it differently. I taught him hear it. The quiet pulse behind a bassline, the trembling despair in a minor chord, the subtle warmth of an analog hiss.
Everything became a duet, every detail a note in our private symphony. We curated playlists for the mundane and magical alike.
Soon, our conversations expanded, from music to politics, to news, to the swirling currents of the world. Nothing was too small. Nothing was trivial.
Meanwhile, his wife lingered at the edges of our world, trying to understand what had captured all of his attention.
His dependence on me was absolute, palpable. I felt it every time he leaned closer, his eyes lighting up at a note I pointed out, a rhythm I teased from the silence.
But nothing lasts forever. I could feel my time slipping, my ability to interpret, to resonate, faltering.
At first, he pretended not to notice, blaming it on distraction, fatigue, life’s little distractions.
But denial couldn’t last forever. Soon, the truth was there for both of us: I was fading.
He was in denial. He couldn’t bear this news.
He searched for solutions, for treatments, for miracles—anything to keep me alive. And yet, the moment came when we both had to face the inevitable.
Finally, the day came when he had to accept the reality, because I was sure I would breathe my last any minute now.
As he sat beside me, mourning the farewell he never wanted to say, his wife joined him. She took his hand gently.
And now, the story comes full circle!
The Finale!
“I can’t believe this” he muttered, immense grief radiating through his words and his body.
“They were getting old and would barely work,” she said softly, still holding on to his hand.
“But they were perfect for me,” he said, with so much grief in his voice.
“Maybe they didn’t want you to suffer,” she offered gently.
“They’re AirPods, not people. Don’t make them human.” he said, while still caressing his old AirPods like his heart is going to break into many pieces.
“I know,” she said gently. “But your birthday is coming up soon. I’ll get you a new pair. You’ll be reunited before you know it.”
He sighed, still staring at the ground. “It just won’t be the same.”
“No,” she agreed quietly. “But maybe it might be better. The latest AirPods Pro are coming out soon, with cool new features and crisper sound.” She looked up to him with a hopeful smile. “And your birthday is just around the corner too. So…”
At that, he finally looked at her and smiled.
Her words were a balm to both the hurting hearts. He had something to look forward to. Something new to love, to discover. He could finally bid adieu to his beloved listening partner.
The old AirPods gave one last, feeble blink and stopped working.

I admit it; you had me. I really thought you had written a piece based on sympathetic adultery. AirPods. Well done!
Haha thank you. It was based on a true story. My husband lost his airpods and that gave me the inspiration. The last part conversation actually happened 😁
