In the fourth installment of the Mr. Lemoncello series, Chris Grabenstein introduces an imaginative twist by turning kids into puzzle pieces, adding a fresh, exciting dimension to the series and making the brainwork even more thrilling. His knack for blending technology and creativity in a children’s mystery is nothing short of brilliant.
Grabenstein’s portrayal of pre-teen life is another highlight. He captures the essence of school dynamics—friendships, subtle bullying, and competitive spirit—with remarkable maturity and sensitivity. The friendships between Kyle Keeley, Sierra Russell, Akimi Hughes, Haley Dailey, Miguel Fernandez, and even Andrew Peckelman (despite initial rivalries) are heartwarming and authentic. The evolution of their relationships, particularly as they navigate team rivalries, showcases the power of empathy and collaboration.
The book also sheds light on Charles Chiltington, the resident bully, in a nuanced way. By exploring his motivations—driven by a demanding father who equates worth with winning—Grabenstein encourages readers to see beyond surface behaviors and understand the complexities of others’ actions. This adds a layer of depth that elevates the story beyond a simple adventure.
Kyle Keeley stays true to himself, even when he gets a little overconfident. He’s the kid who values friendship and fairness over winning at all costs, even his own. This is a life lesson worth revisiting, no matter your age. Jesse Bernstein’s narration is the cherry on top of this delightful treat. He captures each character’s personality with energy and warmth, making the listening experience feel like a theatrical performance.
Though written for children, I can’t stay away from this series. Chris Grabenstein has created a world so full of creativity, puzzles, humor, and heart that it’s irresistible. This installment is another joyful reminder of why I fell in love with Mr. Lemoncello’s library in the first place.

I’m obsessed with this book! It’s a puzzle-packed, heartwarming ride that reminds you why friends matter more than trophies. Add this to your TBR, whether you’re 10 or 100—it’s a guaranteed smile. Jesse Bernstein’s narration makes the audiobook a must.
