Book Blurb:
Ashcroft Manor, 14 October 1887. A storm has flooded the bridges and sealed the house, and by morning Lord Edmund Ashcroft is found poisoned at his writing desk, the study door locked from the inside. Four guests remain, and one of them is the killer. Using a newspaper report, suspect dossiers, a floor plan and the housekeeper’s timeline, readers work through fourteen fair-play clues and a deduction grid to name the room, the weapon, the time and the motive. Graduated hints, a full walkthrough, a hidden cipher and a Certificate of Achievement round out the case file.
Let’s talk about the book:
The presentation is the star in this book. The book opens with a period newspaper front page and then moves to the inspector’s case notes. The case notes have everything: a hand-drawn-style floor plan, portrait suspect cards, a “web of connections” case board and an evidence list. It all looks like a case file, and the cream palette holds it all together very well. I’ll happily hand it over to a fellow mystery buff in a heartbeat.
The puzzle is fair-play. The “How to” explains the game rules very well. The Verdict Form makes you commit to an answer before the reveal. The theatrics and extra grids will make you want to do it all, all over again.
The only thing I want to call out is that for experienced grid solvers, this might feel a bit too easy. I did it myself and couldn’t crack it so easily, but a friend who does this regularly followed through pretty quickly. It’s a lovely package for an evening activity, especially for beginners. Buy the paperback and not the ebook. It’s worth it.
Would I recommend it?
If you have ever wanted to be the detective instead of just reading about one, Murder at Ashcroft Manor hands you the case file. I spent two hours with this ARC by the author and still didn’t crack it on my own (a friend who solves grids for fun got there much faster, so mileage varies). The presentation is GORGEOUS. Would I do it again… absolutely. Beginners, this is your evening activity. Add it to your TBR and keep a pencil handy.
