Chapter One
Read time: 8 minutes
The clock’s soft ticks echoed through Emma’s cozy Toronto apartment, each second stretching like a thread in an unraveling tapestry.
She smoothed her simple yet elegant dress, a choice that made her feel ready for anything, or anyone. At 45, she still carried the spark of that wide-eyed 20-year-old who had first encountered him 25 years ago.
Robert.
He had whispered his promise through a cryptic message: he would arrive today.
September 9, 2025.
No exact time, no fanfare. Just the electric certainty of his presence after eight long years.
Since the text arrived, time had become strange. Something she would focus on and desperately didn’t want to focus on. The more she watched the minutes crawl, the slower they seemed to move.
Based on all the visits before, she knew it would likely be evening before he arrived. Of course, she allowed herself the flutter of hope that maybe, just maybe, he would surprise her in the morning. But when the hours had passed and the sun climbed higher into the sky, she resigned herself to her original intuition. Evening it would be.
The air hummed with anticipation as she lit vanilla-scented candles, their warm glow flickering across bookshelves crammed with her favorite thrillers. Tonight was special.
It had been eight years since she last saw him. Eight years since she had heard his voice, shared his company, walked alongside him into the unknown. Each reunion had carved itself into her memory with the precision of a chisel, impossible to erase.
They first met in 2000, amid the bustle of Toronto Pearson airport. She remembered it like it was yesterday: the airport, the rush of departures, the scent of coffee and perfume mingled with the cold metallic tang of jet fuel.
Emma was rushing to catch a flight (where to, she couldn’t recollect). That’s where she saw him for the first time. Tweed jacket, tousled hair, a mischievous grin in his eyes. Everything else was a haze for her except for his magnetic pull.
Their introduction was brief. A polite smile, exchanged names, and a brief, very brief conversation on the blend of science and faith. But she was in a hurry to catch her flight, and the moment slipped away too fast.
But for days afterward, she caught herself replaying the encounter, constantly wondering about the man who looked like he was carrying secrets in his eyes. Emma hoped that fate would be kind enough to bring him back to her.
It was.
