Chapter Two
The second time they ran into each other was in a store. A chance meeting, or perhaps something more. This time, Emma didn’t let the moment slip away. She stayed, grateful that he had the same time to linger. They talked for what felt like forever that day. He shared stories of Switzerland, the whispered histories, the riddles etched into ancient stones. And she listened.
She was mesmerized. Captivated. Irrevocably hooked.
From that moment, their relationship began. An unusual one, marked less by proximity, and more by journeys.
When he left, he promised that next time, she could go with him. She thought it to be a polite gesture, an empty line to soften a goodbye.
But three years later, she found herself in Paris, and then in London. With him.
Cities that people visited and left behind without a second thought, but cities they made their own. Their adventures weren’t just trips. They were lifelines, threads tying her heart to his. They sprinted through moonlit halls, his calm explanations of the Mona Lisa’s hidden clues and Fibonacci sequences guiding her. His knowledge in art, history, and conspiracy was utterly captivating.
By the end of that trip, she knew. He had ruined her for anyone else, his intellect a flame that ignited her own curiosity.
A soft ping from her phone brought her back to reality.
“En Route.” Her pulse quickened. Robert was always so mysterious, his arrivals shrouded in unpredictability.
She decided to distract herself. A pot of comfort food was simmering on the stove. A good bottle of wine set aside for the evening. She poured herself a cup of tea, deciding to give her hands something to do while her mind wandered. Savoring the warmth from her cup, she reflected on 2009, their third adventure.
Six long years had passed since Paris. Distance and time had not weakened their bond. If anything, they had crystallized it. This time, they had met in the United States, in a different kind of travel. During this travel, she studied him carefully. His little quirks, the way his eyes lit up at certain passages in books, his quiet mannerisms. She took time to research his work, learning as much as she could about symbology to better follow his passion, to catch the nuances in his stories.
He taught her about the coded pyramid within the dollar bill and the House of the Temples symbols. She observed his aversion for tight spaces and his boundless knowledge. His Mickey Mouse watch. That journey wasn’t about thrills. It was a deepening intimacy, a shared quest for hidden truths.
That trip drew them closer through quiet spaces between words.
The clock inched towards noon. While setting her apartment and rearranging things here and there, her thoughts raced ahead to the next two travels, both to Europe. A continent that made her heart quicken just to think of. The thrill of anticipation from those trips still lingered in her bones, its sweeping cathedrals, cobbled streets, and silent statues.
With him, Europe became more than just a destination. He showed her layers of history and hidden meaning she would never have discovered alone. He illuminated the world.
She loved Europe for its history and culture. The charm of its old cities, the whispers of its past. But more than that, she loved seeing it through his eyes. The way he explained history’s layers underneath mundane streets changed the city for her. It became alive, like a puzzle to be explored rather than a postcard she might pin on a wall.
His knowledge turned stone into story, monuments into mysteries. With him, travel was never just geography. It was transformation.
He had said they were returning to Europe again. Prague specifically.
She pictured the Astronomical Clock’s intricate gears. What puzzles awaited them this time? She couldn’t wait.
